Moon Phases
Home Forecast Chronology Astro Pics Log MoonPaper Get Notified!

Beginning the evening of Feb 15, 2002, I started a project of capturing a representative picture of each phase of the Moon (on daily intervals). The pictures are mosaics being taken through my Meade LX-90 telescope using a webcam. I expect this project to go on for some time, given that most of the pictures are being taken from my patio in Seattle, WA.

Notes:
  • User Friendly Link of the DayBlue highlighted cells indicate the Moon's current age rounded to the nearest day.
  • Images that have been superceded and replaced can be found here.
  • The times shown are for the first and last frames of the mosaic. Times are given in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), also known as Greenwich Meridian Time (GMT).
  • Illumination percentages and the age of the Moon are calculated using my Moon Calculator. I've listed the approximate age of the moon in parenthesis next to the illumination. To figure out what box to put the picture in, I am rounding to the closest day. (This is not the traditional way of calculating the age. Traditionally, a 2.9 day Moon would be considered a 2 day Moon.)
  • The final mosaics are approximately 3400x3400 pixels in resolution. These originals are not posted on the website due to limited storage space.
  • Due to the poor low-light performance of the Connectix Color QuickCam, percentages may seem off. This is because the pictures are not showing the true terminus. Now that I am using the Philips Vesta 690k, the terminus should be a little easier to see on pictures since 7/15/2002.
