13 Day Old Moon - 2/21/2005

Feb 22, 2005 04:04-06:00 UTC - I was excited that all of the clear skies we have been having in Seattle this winter finally lined up with one of the phases I was missing at a time I was available. With this mosaic, I now have a complete sequence from day 2 to day 15. Almost 2 full weeks! Unfortunately, the clear skies didn't lead to very stable seeing. Due to this, the individual frames varied a lot in clarity. So, I've spent a lot of time working on the mosaic trying to get as close as possible to a look of unity across the whole picture.

Features: Lots of detail in the southern part of the terminus. Of special interest is a crater that is filled to rim with lava (Wargentin). You'll find it just below the large two-tone crater Schickard.

Conditions: Mostly clear. Moderate to poor seeing due to light winds / unstable atmosphere.

The image was created by stitching together 50 images using Paintshop Pro 8.1. Each image was created by capturing AVIs with a Philips Vesta 690k and using K3CCDTools. I preprocessed each image using Registax 3, stacking up to 100 frames. The telescope used was a Meade LX-90 (8" SCT, f/10).
