Positive Parenting Your Teens: The A to Z Book of Sound Advice and Practical Solutions
Karen Renshaw Joslin and Mary Bunting Decher
Fawcett-Columbine, 1997
ISBN: 0-44990996-4

Written in the same format as Positive Parenting from A to Z, this book offers enormously useful guidelines for helping young people to grow with confidence and self-discipline while utilizing their boundless energy and creativity. The authors emphasize ways to develop cooperation, use active listening, and earn mutual respect. They suggest what to do, give examples of helpful dialogue for challenging situations, suggest preventative measures to incorporate in daily parenting, and offer guidelines about when to seek outside help. An excellent introduction describes what happens during the teen years, followed by a clear description of the positive parenting philosophy on which the book is based. A section called "Tools of the Trade," includes listening skills, using fewer words, problem-solving strategies, setting limits and accountability, taking a break, staying calm, offering choices, planning for special times, creating a parent network, and the importance of encouragement and humor. This is an enormously useful book for parents of adolescents, and we believe all middle school and high school teachers will also find it an important reference book.
