From the Observation Deck

by Dee Dickinson

Lighthouses of Knowledge! What a great concept! Imagine a city with fifty glasslike towers glowing day and night reminding people of their free access to knowledge through books and the Internet. Surely these lighthouses must be located in a large, affluent metropolis? Actually, they are in Curitiba, Brazil, a remarkable learning community of "interconnected, interactive, evolving solutions" to social problems. You will read about Curitiba in the article that follows.

We'd like to think of our virtual Building as a kind of lighthouse that also offers freely available knowledge to our users. As we have created it over the last seven years of our twenty-year-old network, we have drawn from the expertise of an international community of learners who shed light on a worldwide movement towards educational transformation. In our own country we learn about and share news from dedicated educators implementing new ways of helping students to learn at all ability levels, and we learn as well from the innovative programs in other countries. We trust that our international perspective is illuminating for all involved. Please remember that the lights are always on in the Building!
